 Welcome to NYHoyas for Others!

NYHoyas for Others organizes community service events in the New York area for local Georgetown alumni. Activities range from participating in city clean-up days to assisting in soup kitchens to working in local schools. Organizations with which NYHoyas for Others routinely partners include New York Cares Day and St. Xavier Jesuit Church. These community service group activities, organized at least four times per year, bring together Hoyas in the New York area in projects that reflect the Jesuit tradition of serving others.

Harleem Link Charter School is Looking for Mentor Volunteers!

5th Grader / Middle School Mentor Volunteer Description...

Our kids are growing up!  Most of them began with us in first grade when we opened in 2005 or in second grade the following year, but now our 40 fifth graders are getting ready for the daunting, and crucial to their academic futures, middle school application and selection process.  In 2009, this process is somewhat akin to the hyper-competitive and stressful college application process.  But with the help of a dedicated volunteer mentor, families and children can have an extra bit of support and guidance to give them an edge in finding the school of their dreams.

Program Oversight – Ms. Catrina Horton, Harlem Link Parent Coordinator

Key outcome – The acceptance of our scholars into a quality middle school that fits their individual academic, social and emotional needs while appropriately preparing them for entrance into a college prep high school.

Qualifications – Passion for supporting children, basic professional organizational and communication skills, ability to meet in-person time commitment

Time commitment – Mentors and their students will meet twice a month starting at the end of October through March.  Many students will be mentored on-site by school staff.  Their bimonthly meetings will occur during the lunch hour (12:30 to 1:30 pm) at the school, but volunteers may arrange and coordinate their own after-school or weekend meeting schedule with families, checking in with Ms. Horton.

Resources – Ms. Horton will provide an information packet, including:

            -     detail on the admissions process

·                      -        the student portfolios that they will be helping to put together

            -       what we can do to best achieve our key outcome

                         -      calendar including due dates and meeting dates

Spots are limited.  Contact Steven Evangelista at sevangelista@harlemlink.org if you are interested!
